The effect of weather and radio conditions on the reception of radio and TV broadcasts

The strength of radio and TV reception signals is affected by weather conditions in addition to the devices themselves. Factors that can attenuate the signal include rain, snow, fog, and the leaves growing on trees in the spring. During winter, snow can accumulate around the antenna, which may significantly affect its performance and functionality.

The most challenging weather phenomenon for reception is called "radio propagation", which can even completely interrupt the visibility and audibility of broadcasts. Radio propagation is the result of radio signals traveling excessively far. The circumstances that cause this phenomenon occur when the temperature of the air in the lower atmosphere rises up in layers, and the relative humidity of the air drops sharply as one goes higher. This causes radio frequencies to reflect and travel hundreds of kilometers, causing interference. The effect of radio propagation is small near the station, but it increases at the edge of the coverage area, about 50-60 kilometers from the station.

Exceptional radio propagation can interfere with reception in two ways. The strength of the desired station's signal can drop significantly, or the signal level of a more distant station broadcasting on the same channel can increase due to excessive propagation. For TV viewers, this may mean that during strong radio propagation, TV broadcasts may not appear at all, or radio programs may not be audible. Radio propagation usually occurs when high pressure dominates. Technically, it is not possible to prevent interference caused by this phenomenon. Radio propagation can last for hours or up to a day. The interference disappears as the weather changes.

TV viewers can reduce the impact of radio propagation interference by using a more effective, directional, and better front-to-back ratio antenna in challenging installation locations.

We recommend using the following product for challenging installation locations:
